Spring of 1944. The war is nearing its end. Thousands of concentration camp inmates were brought to the Normandy coast to repair the defenses damaged by Allied aircraft. On one of the islands, a small group of prisoners, led by Colonel Zakharov, prepares an uprising. The course of events was accelerated by an action taken by French prisoners of war. They barricaded themselves in the bunker and were ready, sacrificing themselves, to undermine the fortress.

Sakuma Ryu, who runs a liquor store alone in downtown Tokyo, ends up living with his eldest son and his wife after a small fire breaks out. His sons are always there to help, but Ryu, who has stubbornly lived alone since her husband's death, feels uncomfortable there, and frequently visits his tea-drinking buddy Kinue to vent his frustrations. However, Kinue's sudden death and a postcard inspire Ryu to set off on a solo trip in her husband's beloved Mini Cooper. Her destination is Matsuyama in Shikoku, where she spent her childhood and where her first love, for whom she harbored a faint crush, still lives. The Mini Cooper speeds smoothly between Gifu and Kyoto. But when Shota and a young couple from the future join Ryu in the Mini Cooper, things start to look ominous...

At a border town, Eddie Dean and his partner, Soapy Jones, attend a fiesta at the home of Don Lopez who, in accordance with his custom, displays a valuable diamond necklace to his guests and has one of them, Maria, wear it. Jim Barrett, another guest, offers to buy the necklace but Don Lopez declines to sell. Barrett, with his henchmen Corey and Avery, plan to steal the necklace and the rest of the Lopez diamonds. Maria, to Eddie's surprise, appears to be working with the outlaws. But, as Eddie's investigation proceeds, it develops that Barrett's gang has also robbed Don Lopez of his gold, and that Maria is a representative of the Mexican government, sent to protect the gems.
